Bikes

One of the many curious things I saw in Tokyo was that a lot of people use bikes to get around, which is kind of surpring considering the enormity of the city (but surely is cheaper than taking the train/underground)

People in Japan don’t use bicycles instead of the train…they’re used in addition to the train. I mean, we use bicycles here for getting around our own neighborhoods…and to get to the train station (and then take the train).

    • Well yeah, that kind of depends on the person (my friend lives in Tokyo and she uses the bike instead of the train). In Madrid, where I live, there aren’t many people using bikes.

Certainly. I should say most people here use their bicycles to go short distances. Mostly neighborhood shopping and getting to / from the train / subway station.

I grew up in America. In that country, bicycles are mainly only ridden by children. Almost everyone there drives a car everywhere.
